Training tomorrow’s leaders while using
sustainable resources to best advantage
The spectacular growth of Kruger Inc. since 1984 has had a
positive effect on the economic development of Quebec, preserving
and creating thousands of direct and indirect jobs in regions
often affected by a high rate of unemployment.
Kruger Inc. has adopted policies that support research in the
fields of forestry and pulp and paper, in order to ensure the
sustainable development of the resource, and has established
programs that support literacy and higher education. The company’s
commitment to the university milieu has promoted the development
of highly-skilled individuals, from which Kruger has had the
privilege of recruiting a large number of talented specialists
and managers.
To become a leader in the international pulp and paper industry
is an achievement, but the links the company has developed with
the world of education and research are truly remarkable.
Kruger’s participation in literacy
and education
Newspaper in Education Program
Since 1989, Kruger has participated in the international
“Newspaper in Education” program, which was
set up in 1955 to promote using newspapers in the classroom
as learning tools for reading, spelling and writing. The
company offers $25 per 100 metric tons of newsprint sold
to all customers who participate in this program. These
donations are made through the Gene H. Kruger Fund.

Sherbrooke University
Kruger has been established as a major company in the
Sherbrooke area for nearly 50 years, and the Company made
a substantial donation to the 1988-92 University of Sherbrooke
Financing Campaign to create an endowment fund bearing
the name of its founder, Mr. Gene H. Kruger. The scholarships
for excellence generated by this fund are awarded to second-year
students studying chemistry or chemical engineering.

Laval University – Québec City
Kruger and its affiliated companies are active participants
in educational institution communities. For example, for
the past 15 years, students in the forestry faculty of
Laval University have been organizing annual colloquia
sponsored entirely by the Company, as a part of Forest
Sciences Week.

Scholarships
In all regions where Kruger and its affiliated
companies carry on their business activities, study scholarships
are offered to students in administration, science, chemistry,
physics and engineering, including forestry engineering
and pulp and paper studies, using the Gene-H.-Kruger Fund,
which was created to support emerging knowledge and advances
in research. The scholarships for excellence that this
fund generates are awarded to second-year students studying
chemistry and chemical engineering. |

Gannett Corp. repays Kruger,
who passes it on…
In December 2006, the students of Bedford school
in the Côte-des-Neiges area of Montreal, a school
that is near Kruger’s head office, benefited from
a $10,000 donation, which our company had received from
Gannett Corp. when our Publication Papers business unit
was awarded their prize for the best supplier of the year.
In a letter of November 29 to Mr. Joseph Kruger II, Mrs.
Hélène Bourdages, Director of Bedford School,
and Mrs. Édith Blain, chair of the school’s
board, thanked him for his generosity to the students
of Bedford School, a neighbour of Kruger’s head
office.
“Bedford School is a well-known institution in
our city and we are proud to see that there is a golden
and joyous link along Bedford Road between our two institutions.
Thanks to your generosity, we will be able to provide
our students with a multimedia room, supplied with state-of-the-art
equipment, including a giant screen and loudspeakers like
the ones in the cinema. A sum of $500 will be used to
buy school supplies for students whose families cannot
afford them.”
